This is an extract from The Dubliners by James Joyce and this book was translated into Polish. http://books.google.com/books?id=M3BmhdJG3z8C&pg=PA17&lpg=PA17&dq=we+ran+the+gauntlet+of+the+rough+tribes+from+the+cottages&source=web&ots=MbP82K998D&sig=_eU1ArXvkVXwgBtLFXeTTaoex_M

    It means:

    "Krytykowalismy wiejskie plemiona"

but it has a very strong meaning.
If you put few more sentences, it would be easier – as I cannot be sure if I don’t know what this book is about…

the dark muddy lanes behind the houses, [b:db17873d51]where we ran the gauntlet of the rough tribes from the cottages[/b:db17873d51], to the back doors of the dark dripping gardens where odours arose from the ashpits, to the dark odorous stables where a coachman smoothed and combed the horse or shook music from the buckled harness. When we returned to the street, light from the kitchen windows had filled the areas [i:db17873d51]

    tlumaczenie:

…gdzie znosilismy krytyke ze strony dzikich szczepow mieszkajacych w chatach

(zapewne chodzi mu o wiesniakow, ale nalezy zachowac oryginalne przeslanie autora 😉 )

run a gauntlet – znosic krytyke

[b:be9d152d99]Good Question[/b:be9d152d99]. I try to be much more articuate in the future, I believe
whereas my "alter ego" or my "equal ego" either whispers sweet poison of [b:be9d152d99]that thing[/b:be9d152d99] into me.Anyway, I dunno why I read this and that. 🙂
