The victim was taken to the Royal Liverpool hospital where his condition was today described as poorly but stable.
The man had been with a friend, also Polish, when they tried to enter the Grove Hotel pub in Breckfield Road North but were turned away because it was after last orders.
As they walked down Breckfield Road North they were approached by two men, believed to be in their 20s, and a confrontation took place.
Police said racist comments were directed at the men. One of them managed to run away but the other was attacked with a knife.
A spokesman for Merseyside police said: „We know the man was walking home with a friend after being refused entry to a nearby pub.
„They were approached by two men and a brief confrontation took place, during which racist comments were made.
„While the friend was able to get away from the confrontation, the victim suffered several stab wounds caused by a knife.
„Although he suffered very serious injuries, he was able to get to a house and raise the alarm.”
His English is described as poor and an interpreter will be brought in to help the investigation.
